Providence, RI - Staff members at the Burn Center at Rhode Island Hospital (RIBC) teamed up with the Friends of Jack Foundation to run 19.3 miles at Disney World in November and raised $25,000 for improvements to technology and patient experience at the RIBC.

Twelve runners participated in the RunDisney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend from November 1-4, 2024, in Orlando, Florida.

The RIBC, a part of Lifespan, is the only accredited burn center in Rhode Island. It employs trained professionals and has advanced technology to provide superior care to each patient. Dr. David T. Harrington, Medical Director of the RIBC, and his staff, care for adult and pediatric burn survivors from a large catchment area including Rhode Island, northeastern Connecticut, and Southeastern Massachusetts.

The money raised by the runners will assist in purchasing a new laser for the scar management program, and a virtual reality (VR) system to provide a non-pharmacologic pain management option for inpatient burn survivors during painful procedures.

In 2023, RIBC staff member Hillary Lorenco and Jill Fearons, founder of the Friends of Jack Foundation, ran the RunDisney Princess Half Marathon Weekend and completed the 10K and the Half Marathon totaling 19.3 miles to support the Hasbro Children’s Hospital pre-operative services. With their fundraising, a $5,000 gaming system was purchased to be used by the pre-operative pediatric patients while they await their surgery.
